Singapore’s rapidly ageing population has underscored the importance of supporting seniors to age well. While ageing is an inevitable part of life, it does not have to be dull and we can learn to embrace it with open arms, celebrating it as a vibrant and fulfilling chapter of life.

By adopting a positive outlook about ageing, we can navigate this stage of life joyfully and inspire others, particularly seniors, to do the same. This serves as a motivation for seniors to spend their golden years meaningfully engaging in active ageing activities that are beneficial for them. Staying active also offers numerous benefits for seniors, including improved quality of life, increased strength to prevent injuries, a better ability to maintain independence, and reduced risk of chronic illnesses [1].

TIPS FOR HELPING SENIORS TO STAY ACTIVE

Engage in social activities: Social interactions are beneficial to both physical and mental well-being [2]. Engaging in social activities helps to combat loneliness and social isolation frequently experienced by seniors who are not socially engaged. Seek out activities organised by your community centres and active ageing centres that are aligned to your interests. It could be an outing to town, a song performance or gardening in the centre. Strengthen your community by hosting a block party at your void deck or home and invite your neighbours over to spend time together.

Adopt a healthy lifestyle: Eating well is essential for healthy ageing. Seniors can benefit greatly from free health talks offered by community centres and active ageing centres. These sessions provide valuable insights on the importance of eating well, practical knowledge on reading food labels and tips on creating balanced meal plans that support energy levels, cognitive function and disease prevention, empowering seniors to make informed decisions for a healthier lifestyle.

Keep your mind active: Mental stimulation is just as important as physical activity for seniors who are at risk of cognitive decline [3]. Spend some time each day engaging in activities that keep your mind working, such as puzzles, sudoku or crosswords. Fun fact: Many seniors at TOUCH's Active Ageing Centres enjoy playing this tile-based game called Rummy-O that sharpens their strategic thinking. If you’re living with your grandparents, consider engaging them with this game. Apart from games, reading books or newspapers is another great way to maintain your cognitive function.

Exercise regularly: For older persons, try taking part in shorter duration lower-impact exercises such as walking and stretching. Staying physically active is an excellent way to strengthen the body and maintain muscle mass to reduce the risk of falls and injuring yourself [5]. Explore different types of exercises such as chair Zumba and Pilates to keep the workout fresh for you. Doing it with your friends and neighbours may help you stay motivated and make working out more enjoyable too.

Become a volunteer:
Encourage seniors to stay active by volunteering! Giving back to the community can provide seniors with a strong sense of purpose in life and improve their self-esteem. Additionally, volunteering offers an opportunity to contribute valuable skills and experiences while connecting with others, fostering a greater sense of belonging. For seniors who are socially isolated or with mobility issues, hearing from a fellow senior who understands their challenges may encourage them to step out of their house to participate in activities. Did you know that TOUCH Active Ageing initiated the Seniors Caring for Seniors (SCS) programme where seniors are mobilised and trained to meet the psycho-social needs of other vulnerable seniors? Started in August 2013, the SCS provides an effective point of help and support for frail and vulnerable elderly in the community, where volunteers are matched and deployed in pairs for weekly home visits.
